Tithing is an Act of Worship

By GRACE HOULE on FAITH

Tithing

Tithing is an act of worship. It is an expression of the heart, that we trust God with our finances even if the numbers don’t make sense.  We give God the first fruits, the best off the top, that we have set aside to give.

It doesn’t matter the ebbs and flows of our financial stance. I know God provides for my needs, as He has proven faithful time and time again, and I will trust Him.

Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

MATTHEW 6:25-26

What is tithing?

Definition: A tenth, a portion set aside to give back to God

Why do we tithe?

1. Act of Obedience

God clearly displays in His written word that we are to honor Him with the firstfruits of our money. I would extend this definition to also include our time and resources. According to Collins English Dictionary, firstfruits is defined as “The first results, products, or profits of an undertaking.”

Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.

PROVERBS 3:9-10

We also assume responsibility for bringing to the house of the LORD each year the firstfruits of our crops, and of every fruit tree.

NEH 10:35

And this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.

GEN. 28:22

2. Act of Worship

Now, tithing is not as simple as it may appear. God’s desire is not for every Christian just to give ten percent of their earnings, and check it off their “to do list.” He wants our heart to be in the right place. In essence it is an act of worship and thanksgiving for all God has done for us.

You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart.

PSALM 51:16-17

In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.

GEN. 4:3-5

Why wouldn’t we tithe?

God is the provider of everything, and will supply all our needs. So what is holding us back from honoring God with our money, time and resources?

The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

PS. 24:1

And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

PHIL. 4:19
